3D engraving vs laser vs UV print: choosing a branding method

The five methods at a glance

Every custom grinder you've ever seen was branded one of five ways: 3D metal engraving (in gold, silver or rose gold finish), laser engraving, full-colour UV printing, or a polycarbonate sticker. They differ on three axes — permanence, colour fidelity, and cost. Engraving is carved into the metal itself, so it can never rub off. UV print delivers full colour and gradients. Stickers are the budget entry point.

3D metal engraving — the premium standard

3D engraving carves your logo into the aluminium, then finishes the recessed artwork in mirror gold, polished silver or rose gold. Because the mark is physically cut into the metal, it survives years of daily handling without wear. Gold reads as flagship merch; silver reads clean and technical against any anodized colour; rose gold pairs beautifully with pink, black and pastel bodies. If the grinder is a retail product or collector's item, this is the method that justifies the price tag.

Laser engraving — precision and detail

Laser engraving etches artwork directly into the anodized coating, exposing crisp contrast beneath. Its superpower is detail: fine line work, small text, serial numbers and even scannable QR codes hold perfectly. It's the method of choice for technical-looking brands, batch information, and designs with intricate linework that a deep 3D cut would swallow.

UV printing — when colour is the brand

If your identity lives in colour — gradients, illustration, photographic art — full-colour UV printing is the only method that reproduces it faithfully. Modern UV machines lay high-resolution colour art directly onto the metal. The trade-off is that a printed surface, while durable, sits on top of the metal rather than in it, so extremely heavy daily abuse will show sooner than engraving. For art-forward brands, podcasts and collabs, that trade is usually worth it.

Polycarbonate stickers — the honest budget option

A glossy domed polycarbonate decal in full colour is the fastest, cheapest way to brand a grinder — especially acrylic bodies, small runs and event giveaways. It won't pretend to be engraving, but a well-made domed sticker looks intentional and holds up fine in normal use. Use it when quantity matters more than heirloom permanence.

How to decide in 30 seconds

Match the method to the job:

  • Flagship retail merch or collector product → gold / silver / rose gold 3D engraving
  • Fine detail, small text, QR codes → laser engraving
  • Full-colour artwork, gradients, illustration → UV print
  • Giveaways, acrylic bodies, tight budgets → polycarbonate sticker
  • Not sure → preview your actual logo in every finish in the customizer, then get a proof
